Cianaodh’s Corner #1

My Bedside Altar

Different people come to esoteric paths for different reasons. Some are seeking instruction in the magickal arts or others with whom to practice them. Some are seeking connection with their gods, their ancestors, nature and/or earth. Some are interested in paranormal events and researching those inexplicable things which happen as one realm of existence crosses paths with another. In Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition we are interested in all of these things but if there was one thing I would have to point to as primary in our pursuit it would be the seeking of a connection with those Kindred through whom many of our ancestors experienced the world in which they lived. Through ritual, myth, songs and stories of the gods and other entities in whom our ancestors (all of our ancestors) believed as well as their observances of the cycle of life and the wheel of the year they placed themselves in balance and harmony with the natural world. It is my belief that we have to place ourselves into this state of balance and harmony before effective magickal working can take place. Further, I believe we are better able to observe and make sense of paranormal occurrences when we are in a mind state that is attuned with our environment. So, first and foremost, in Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition and in my own temple, Temple Of the Standing Stones, we focus on ritual and having both a reverence for and relationship with the Kindred in whatever way we perceive of them. I believe the concept of gods is one that is rather elusive for the mortal mind to fully comprehend. We all have our own experiences with something greater than ourselves (or not) and we all take away from those experiences what we will based on our own interpretations and world view. What I might call gods and goddesses, you might consider to be “the universe” or a “collective conscious” and that’s fine. My interpretation is not more or less valid than your own. The important thing for us is the sharing of the experiences and, together, contemplating what they might all mean.

We are seeking to develop a culture of our own through our gatherings at Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition. We like to get together frequently because we genuinely do enjoy one another’s company. We throw around the term “tribe” a lot because we do tend to see ourselves as part of an extended, spiritual family. Oh, we certainly utilize many borrowed elements from the modern Pagan revival which those who have read about or otherwise experienced modern Wicca or other Pagan practices will readily recognize. We mix in some parts of our own which our sisters and brothers of Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition have created. We speak of the old stories and old gods of our ancestors in the present tense because we see them as living entities whose stories are not just something chiseled in stone and covered in dust but living stories still being written each and every day. We say that we are ‘Forging a New Pagan Path” and in our own way we are. We want to be accessible to, not only those who may wish to walk this path with us but also to those who seek to better understand and coexist with us as they continue to walk their own paths. For that reason, the majority of our gatherings are open to anyone who may wish to attend. Please do understand though that those gatherings held at private residences may have attendance limitations due to space considerations. But we want to be the folks you can talk to, hang out with and get to know without being told you have to come with a certain lineage or be initiated by a particular person before you can have a relationship with the gods of your ancestors. It is in your blood and in your spirit. We all have Pagan ancestry and you don’t need a go between to tell you it’s okay to speak with your ancestors. We are here to walk the path with you but we aren’t going to tell you that you need us to walk it for you.

That’s my two cents. That and about 4 bucks might get you a decent cup of coffee.

I’m Cianaodh. Have a Blessed Day.

Temple Day Crafts
Temple Day Crafts

A thousand words…

Some time ago I made a commitment to myself to try to write at least a thousand words per day for Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition as my personal contribution to our cause of building a body of materials which represents the studies, beliefs, thinking and practices of our tradition. A number of these articles reside in clergy training materials available to our initiated members, some are still awaiting review, possible editing and hopefully eventual approval to be published on the Spirit Of the Sycamore Tradition website as publicly available articles in our effort to tell people about ourselves, who we are, what we believe and how we do things. Some might become future segments here on this weekly newsletter as well. I enjoy writing about spiritual matters, history and new findings on the frontiers of science. To me, the search for the truth is a common thread that runs through all of these pursuits and truth is a very worthy quarry to seek on anyone’s quest in life I believe.

As of this past Samhain Temple Of the Standing Stones now has it’s first 2nd Degree Priestess and Priest and they have been doing an exemplary job of writing and officiating our rituals for us these past several weeks for which I am so very grateful. Not only have Wahya and Ta’li Seabhac brought a fresh, new perspective to our ritual style but, having taken the lead on these clergy duties they have afforded me the time to concentrate on doing the writing for our tradition which my position as an elder calls for.

Our sister Arachne Crowsinger, High Priestess of Mystic Willow Coven has been busy this week as well getting new pages and information up on the Spirit Of the Sycamore Tradition website at http://spiritofthesycamore.org/ including a Branches Page with contact info for our individual groups as well as both the Seekers and Teachers Bills of Rights. Soon, we will also be adding events to the calendar for the entire tradition there. So, this might be the place to check in and see if there is something going on near you. Go check it out and come check us out at one of our…

I'm Tired Boss
I’m Tired Boss

Accentuate The Positive

When I graduated from High School in Fort Worth Congressman Jim Wright came out and spoke to our class. He lived through the era of World War II when it seemed that the whole world was spinning out of control and war had become a fact of life all across the globe. He spoke to us of a song by Bing Crosby that was popular in his day that went like this:

You’ve got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mister In-Between

You’ve got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene

The message was then, as it is now, that there will always be times that life seems to be spinning out of control and fear and anxiety seem to be taking hold everywhere. But, no matter how dark and gloomy the clouds look, there is always something positive we can focus on that will lift our spirits and give us hope. Look for those things in your life. They can be as simple as a beautiful sunrise or a flower blooming or you can find them in your children, your family, your loved ones, a faithful companion pet. Whatever vibrations we send out into the world, we are telling the universe, “I want more of this”. So, don’t waste time and energy on worry and fears. Send out what you want more of and watch it unfold. Oh sure, troubles are going to come. Into each life a little rain must fall. But if you keep the momentum positive then you’re heading in the right direction. It’s magick! It really is.

This week’s newsletter will be short and sweet. As the veil thins we are busy preparing for Samhain as well as celebrating birthdays with our families so this is go-go-go time for us. Please enjoy this, latest contribution from the tribe though:

I am just one Warrior
A Guardian of this Land.
I walk these fields
I swim these waters
I absorb their energy through these hands.

We are all one Spirit
Brothers and Sisters
One kind.
No days to pass
No hours to clock
No end shall begin in time.

We all share one voice.
We sing songs That Share one breath.
We echo words
In language no-one has heard
Then sweetly whisper
The same soft death.

Nectar Of The Gods - The blessings of the gods are sweet.
Nectar Of The Gods

This week I would like to share an amazing, fictional short story with you by an author named Shelly Aspenson. I happened upon this and several other great stories on the site Living Write under their category Really True Fairy Tales which you can find here: http://livingwrite.net/category/really-true-fairy-tales/

The Word Sorceress And The Sword Of Truth

By Shelly Aspenson

She watched them prepare to burn her alive. They were in a frenzy to put an end to her softly spoken observations, and the clear-seeing of her gaze as she looked upon them. She had held them spell-bound with her words for so long, it came as a shock when the truth of those words began to cut like the sharpest sword, cutting into ego, and slicing away lies beheld as truth for so long.

Her voice rang out across the clearing, reminding them of how they had searched so hard for the magic of life, only to recoil at its power when they found it within themselves, scrambling frantically to destroy it, or at least cover it up-forever out of sight if not mind. They winced, and hunched into themselves defensively as she asked them what they loved the most about their lives. Was there anything that called to them; gave them joy? Did the heart inside them beat in excitement for anything? What did their eyes behold that left them in awe of the world? What made their souls tremble with ecstasy?

They stacked the wood around her feet as she stood calmly before them, tied roughly to the stake in the center of their world. Nobody would meet her eyes, but she saw their reactions as her words struck home over and over again, and she would not be silent. She would not turn away from them now, even when their every action conspired to send her into the darkness she was safe from, but would be their prison if they refused to listen; if they refused to awaken from their slumber.

“You think to send me into the Abyss, ‘the regions of Hell conceived of as a bottomless pit’. I know that you do this because I am the whisper that screams to your heart, the light of awareness that hurts your eyes, the fire of purpose that causes you discomfort, and the finger that points to the frightening power of your own heart. I know you are afraid of all you are capable of, but to ignore this truth of you is to sentence yourself to the very hell you wish upon me.

I am the Life you look out upon, your fingers pressed enviously upon the glass of the window, seeing freedom, and never touching it with your own hands. I am the Integrity you lost to ‘blend in’ with the crowd, I am the wild, the bold, the fearless, and the joyful part of you that will always remain silent if you do not heed me now. I am the Word Sorceress, the Sword of Truth, the Light of your Soul, the Way to Joy. I am the very best of you, do you really seek to destroy me to blend into the world of today?”

As she spoke, many listened, many held back, some were even brave enough to try to stop the few whose minds were locked into public perceptions, and acceptable behaviors. But the frightened were many, and the torches in hand reached desperately forward to light the lies stacked around her. As the flames fed greedily on the rebuttals, accusations, and denials, she closed her eyes and whispered into the flames that grew in intensity.

“May these words rise on my breath, above the lies that burn.

May every tear that falls from me be just a lesson learned.

And as I dance upon the flames, my spirit turned to smoke,

Let every heart I long to save believe the words I spoke.

At last, when fire lights my heart, as it is wont to do,

May that illumination be the Truth that leads them through.

Remind those who would disregard the Soul they hold inside

That Hell is here on earth disguised as Life they once denied.”

The crowd grew silent as the crackle of the flames grew louder. There was silence and sobbing, sorrow and joy in that clearing as she disintegrated into smoke and flame, the flame of her sparking in the hearts of those hungry, and the smoke choking the perpetually dissatisfied.

As the smoke cleared, all eyes were caught by the figure of a small girl, heart yet untarnished by world or ego. She seemed to shine from within as she walked slowly to the edge of the fire and picked up the Sword of Truth the Sorceress had dropped in her burning. There was total silence, not even a birdsong, as she looked at everyone and smiled sweetly, turning to walk into the forest alone, the heavy sword cutting a path in the dirt as the tip drug behind her.

And those who were not amazed, were envious.

Good Words!
Good Words!

The Autumn Equinox officially came upon us this past Wednesday at 3:22 AM here in Texas and Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition will be celebrating Mabon at Arlington UU Church this afternoon. Although most of us are somewhat insulated from the harvest season in this modern age compared to our agrarian ancestors we can still appreciate the many things which this time of year brings into our lives (Yes, Pumpkin Spice flavored everything. Haha!) and what we may be harvesting symbolically as a result of seeds we planted earlier this year in our lives. We can appreciate the work done by those who are harvesting in the fields to bring us the fine grains and produce of the land at our local farmer’s markets, bakeries and stores. We can see the weather becoming a bit cooler than it was during the blistering summer months and the leaves will soon begin dropping on some of the trees here locally in the coming weeks perhaps. We are inching closer and closer to a favorite Sabbat of modern Pagan minded folks too. SAMHAIN!

image

We are excited enough that we have already begun bringing out the decorations in our household as you can see. 🙂

What about allergies though? If you’re like me, this time of year can also bring some allergies from dust (some of it from those decorations we’ve been bringing out), mold, fungus and other things that get into the air as the seasons change. How can you arm yourself against these maladies? Well, local honey is one good remedy and usually you can find some at your nearby farmer’s market. Some herbal measures worth considering too are:

Echinacea – Also known as purple coneflower this herb has been used for centuries to boost and balance the immune system. It helps with drainage which leads to the elimination of toxins, and can also work to prevent potential infections. Purple coneflower may be found in the wild in several mid-western states, including Texas, and it can be easily grown in flower beds, where it will bloom in summer and fall. The roots are especially beneficial. Also, you can get some from a local supplier in capsule form or to use as a tincture. Years To Your Health is a fine example of a local store in Irving that carries it.

Eyebright – Pretty much any part of this plant growing above ground (ie, not the roots) are both an astringent and anti-inflammatory. It can decrease a hypersensitive response from your mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, throat, and ears making it a perfect remedy for hay fever sufferers. You can probably find preparations of eye-bright in most herb or health food stores too.

Golden Seal – It’s a very bitter remedy coming from the yellow root of this wildflower but it has antibiotic properties and is quite useful in preventing flare ups of hay fever, sinuses, or chest congestion. It is also an anti-inflammatory for the mucous membranes which helps soothe swollen and irritated tissues. Golden seal is beneficial in combating all types of airborne allergies. You can grow it yourself in rich, loose soil, but because it typically grows in shaded woody areas, it takes a lot of patience and special attention. For example, you’ll need to trellis the plant and keep it away from intense and direct sunlight (which we get a lot of around here). You’re probably best off buying it from a health store as well or from local growers. BE CAREFUL if you’re pregnant as it may stimulate mild uterine contractions.

Z. Athena has posted a new essay on our Local Pagan Chat board on the forum entitled ‘Modern Warrior Culture’ this past week with her insights on what it means to be a warrior in this day and age. Go check it out! This is a first in what will hopefully be many contributions from this local member of the North Texas Pagan tribe.

Not going to Da Woods? If you are unable to join us with our friends the Sumerians for a wonderful weekend in Da Woods to commune with nature and the spirits of the land don’t despair. There’s still something great going on here in town this weekend that you might want to go get a piece of. The 53rd Annual American Indian Pow Wow is happening now at Traders Village in Grand Prairie. Several hundred Native Americans, representing dozens of tribes from across the United States, will take part in this celebration of their culture and heritage. The drums will beat for the dancers in full regalia of feathers, buckskin, bells and beadwork competing for prize money and awards in eighteen different dance categories. Spectators will be amazed by the precision and showmanship that even the youngest competitors display in their dancing.

Mead (Public Domain)
Mead (Public Domain)

In another fine example of ways that our ancestors had it right, modern scientists are now looking at mead, the drink of the gods, as possibly the next great medicine. In this story from Modern Notion, Swedish Scientists, Tobias Olofsson and Alejandra Vasquez are said to have found that a mixture of honey and a lactic acid bacteria which is found in the honey stomach of bees creates a salve which was shown to cure wounds in horses that previously wouldn’t heal. They also say that they’ve seen the lactic acid bacteria kill any human pathogen it encounters, even the pathogens that are antibiotic resistant.

Have you checked the forum lately? Temple Of the Standing Stones Forum is a repository of topics, discussions and networking with other Pagan minded folks, seekers and others waiting to be discovered and interacted with. Unlike social networking sites in which discussions eventually scroll into the aether, perhaps never to be found again, you can easily locate a discussion that took place months or even years ago on the forum, read through all that has been said and breathe new life into the topic with a fresh post. It is linked to the world wide web so any user on the internet, using any search engine might find your words and respond, maybe years later. In that way, it’s almost like a message in a bottle. Another nice thing about the forum is we have a collection of handy spells, prayers, chants, stories, song lyrics, poetry and more that you can search through to find just what you need. We won’t force you to use your real name either like some sites out there so if you’re in the broom closet, or sort of in the broom closet, you can use a pseudonym and maintain your anonymity. Your privacy is important to us!

Peace Bread For Lammas - Made by Arachne Crowsinger
Peace Bread For Lammas – Made by Arachne Crowsinger

On August 1st Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition came together for a fun filled Blue Moon Hippie Lammas/Lughnasadh celebration. We were decked out in our newly made tie-dyed shirts, skirts and other wearables. Our sisters and brothers wore peace signs, love beads and other hippiefied accouterments and we set up the ritual space while great tunes from the sixties and seventies played. It was a groovin’ good time and we really enjoyed the afternoon of peace, love and togetherness at Arlington UU Church on California Lane. Later that evening some of us headed up to Groovy Goods for their Woodstock themed Drum Jam with a brief detour at Cici’s to feed our faces with some delicious pizza. Wahya was our High Priestess for the ritual and everyone I spoke with seemed very happy with the energy and overall experience of the Hippie Blue Moon celebration.  I wonder what theme we might decide on for the next Blue Moon? There are several fun ideas we’ve thrown around. A chocolate ritual? Redneck themed? Maybe something from the movies? There is plenty of time to decide but whatever we do I am sure it will be fun and delightful. 🙂

Hey! Anyone up for trying a traditional Scottish Shortbread recipe for our next gathering? Elfkat from Adventures and Musings of an Archdruidess shared this one recently and it sounds rather tasty:

For anyone’s holiday pleasure that wants to make it, here is my great-grandfather’s Scottish Shortbread recipe.

1 lb of flour, preferably unbleached, this equals 4 cups

1 lb of butter and don’t you dare use margarine! That would be a crime!

¼ lb of brown sugar but I cheat and use a loosely packed cup which is more than a ¼ lb.

Cut a large rectangle of brown paper out of a paper bag and put it aside.

Combine all 3 ingredients by hand, no cheating with a mixer! Until it is a smooth, well mixed ball of dough.

Pat out flat on the brown paper about ½ inch thick. Prick with fork to break apart later or don’t and just break it into bits when done.

Place in 350 degree oven for around 15 minutes or until light tan. Do not slip a pan underneath. Just put the paper in the oven. The grease from the butter will prevent the paper from burning.

Remove from oven. Let cool a bit and serve with a nice cup of tea. I prefer Twining’s Prince of Wales.

Our great- grandfather was a professional baker and all our family bakes. So this is required for holidays.

Welcome fellow seekers to this edition of the weekly newsletter of Temple Of the Standing Stones. I am Cianaodh Óg, High Priest and fellow seeker of wisdom.

I received the following information from Judy Watkins about a brand new event coming to the area and she asked us to pass the word along…

The Labyrinth Walk Psychic and Holistic Fair is having its debut event. The inaugural event is on August 16 from 3 to 6 pm. It will repeat on the 3rd Sunday of every month through December. The fair is presented by Labyrinth Walk Coffee House (LWCH) and hosted UU Church of Oak Cliff at 3839 W. Kiest Blvd. Dallas, 75233. Admission is free; $20 per 15 minute session; some participants require a double session.
There will be a variety to chose from: Angel Drawings; Chair Massage; Chakra Healing; DNA Theta Healing®; Energy Healing; Mediumship; Psychic Readings; Reflexology; Reiki; Shamanic Healing; Stone Readings; Tarot Card Readings; Tea Readings; and vendors.

If anyone makes it out to the inaugural event on the 16th please drop me a line and let me know what you think. Also, Local Harvest sent out an email recently about Lavender Season I thought I would share:

We have been watching the progress of this year’s lavender harvest and are happy to report that it has arrived! Many of you must have been keeping an eye out too, because our farmers’ fresh lavender bundles are selling well already. The word is that it’s a beautiful and abundant crop this year.

Lavender is a flower that prompts a lot of enthusiasm among those who love its scent. Our customers adore the fragrant beauty of bunches of fresh lavender, and rave over the dried lavender bundles that hold their fragrance all year. Personally, I rarely travel without a bottle of lavender oil. I love it for it’s calming scent and disinfectant properties. LocalHarvest farmers also offer also carry culinary lavender, sachets, and dried buds, which make a lovely wedding toss! This year we’re offering over 100 lavender products.

With best wishes for a beautiful, bountiful summer,

Erin Barnett
Director
LocalHarvest.org

If you don’t currently use Local Harvest, I highly recommend it. It’s a great place to find out about Farmers’ Markets, Co-Ops and other local food providers and events in your area.

Passion Vine

Did you know that those Passion Vines that are growing all over my back yard are edible? Indeed! They are a source of Vitamin A and Niacin and you can use the ripe Maypop fruits which they produce (if they are properly pollinated) to make preserves or just eat them raw. You’ll know the fruit is ready for eating when it turns a yellowy orange color. The inside of the ripe fruit has a lot of seeds surrounded by a clear goo that kind of looks like snot. Not very appetizing, I know, but it’s actually rather tasty (the maypop goo, not the snot) and worthwhile. Just suck the goo off the seeds kind of like you would with a pomegranate. The leaves can be dried and steeped in boiled water to make a nice tea which contains alkaloids and has a sedative effect.

Learn more about this wonderful vine and see more pictures of it at the great Merriwether’s Foraging Texas site: http://www.foragingtexas.com/2006/08/passion-vinemaypop.html

As always, if you ever have anything that YOU would like to see included in the weekly newsletter, I am always happy to receive submissions from the tribe. Please send it in to templehp@templeofthestones.org with the subject Temple Newsletter and I will be sure to include it and credit you for it. Thank you!
