Spirit Of the Sycamore Elders Hotline
Spirit Of the Sycamore Elders Hotline

Happy Gregorian New Year!

As we enter this new cycle of the standard calendar our temple and tradition are undergoing growth and changes which we hope will help us better serve our communities. One thing we are doing differently now is our newsletter will henceforth (fancy word) be published on a monthly timetable rather than weekly. We feel we will be better able to put out a more robust newsletter with timely information and interesting articles if we are not constantly pushing for a weekly deadline. Also, we are hoping to place more focus on content for the Spirit Of the Sycamore YouTube channel which will give us the ability to show and tell you more about ourselves and what we are all about. Please be sure and subscribe to our channel to keep up with our exciting new offerings. 🙂

Nothing is solid yet but talks are underway for Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition to be holding Sabbat rituals in various locations throughout the Dallas / Fort Worth area. There is a possibility of Imbolc in Garland and Litha in Fort Worth but, still, nothing is firm yet so for now, just chalk it up to the rumor mill. 😉

While this newsletter is rather sparse we do plan to roll out some new sections and content in future editions such as an herb of the month, stone of the month or a bit of lore, history and divination. As always, we are happy to include submissions from the tribe so if you have anything of your own creation which you would like to have featured in the next newsletter please do let us know. Have some ideas for content sections you would like to see added? By all means, let us know that too. We’re here to serve. 🙂

Merry Yule!
Merry Yule!

Winter Solstice!

Tidings of joy and peace to you and yours in this season of so many stories and traditions passed on from generation to generation. Whatever your religious or cultural leanings you are sure to have a few favorite things which symbolize this return of the sun (or for some, the birth of a son) and ways of celebrating with your friends and family. Whether it’s the seeing a beautifully decorated tree, exchanging gifts, kissing under the mistletoe or singing songs of the season and laughing all the way. 🙂 We’ll be gathered for Yule tonight with our tribe and guests in Arlington with the burning of a Yule log and sprigs of holly as we bid farewell to the reign of the holly king and welcome the rebirth of the oak king while the days begin to grow longer following the Winter Solstice. In Druidic tradition the name of this time is “Alban Arthan”, which is Welsh for “Light of Winter”. According to a more poetic telling of the story, the name is “Alban Arthuan”, which means “Light of Arthur”. According to this tale, Arthur is represented by the Sun. In the Winter, the Sun dies and is reborn just as King Arthur is merely sleeping deep inside a mountain and will awaken when his people need him. By another story, on the longest night, in the darkest time of the year, we celebrate the return of the Divine Child, the Mabon, representing the rebirth of the Sun, who will bring warmth, light and life back to Earth again. Whatever tales are your favorite, won’t you join us in celebrating the rebirth of life and bid farewell once again to the darkness?

UPCOMING EVENTS:

TODAY! Yuletide! – Saturday, December 19th, 5PM til 10PM

Come ring in this Yule with Spirit Of the Sycamore Tradition at Cianaodh’s home in Arlington, TX. The address will be provided privately to any who request it upon RSVPing to attend. If you need any info please email templehp@templeofthestones.org. Take part in our ritual and burning of the Yule log then enjoy a fine potluck dinner. We will be doing a white elephant gift exchange with a $20 maximum value so please bring along a wrapped gift if you would like to participate in the fun and games with us. Most anything will do as there will be a couple of rounds of trading or “stealing” so everyone has an opportunity to end up with a gift they are happy with.

Samhain Blessings!
Samhain Blessings!

The veil thins… and the time is right to honor and perhaps make contact with our ancestors, departed loved ones and others who dwell beyond our realm. Although the weather gods decided that camping would not be in the cards for us this Samhain lest we find ourselves muddy and drenched we will still get together to celebrate the Celtic New Year and spend some time together with the living as well as those who have moved on. The initiated clergy of our tradition will be meeting late tonight at an undisclosed location to celebrate the elevation of some of our brothers and sisters who will be receiving new cords as they begin the next leg of their spiritual journey with Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition. Sunday evening we will be holding an open Samhain ritual and invite those who can to join us for a ritual and dinner to honor the ancestors followed by some scrying and other activities to see what we may from the other world. Space is limited in the private home at which we will be gathering so please RSVP if you haven’t already so that we may accommodate as many as we comfortably can.

Have A Blessed Samhain!

New Trade Moon – Saturday, November 14th, 5PM til 10PM

It is the new moon beginning the cycle we call the Trade Moon. This event will be hosted at Cianaodh’s home in Arlington, Texas. Gathering in at 5PM for social time, ritual to begin at 7PM. Address will be given upon request to those who are attending.

Nectar Of The Gods - The blessings of the gods are sweet.
Nectar Of The Gods

This week I would like to share an amazing, fictional short story with you by an author named Shelly Aspenson. I happened upon this and several other great stories on the site Living Write under their category Really True Fairy Tales which you can find here: http://livingwrite.net/category/really-true-fairy-tales/

The Word Sorceress And The Sword Of Truth

By Shelly Aspenson

She watched them prepare to burn her alive. They were in a frenzy to put an end to her softly spoken observations, and the clear-seeing of her gaze as she looked upon them. She had held them spell-bound with her words for so long, it came as a shock when the truth of those words began to cut like the sharpest sword, cutting into ego, and slicing away lies beheld as truth for so long.

Her voice rang out across the clearing, reminding them of how they had searched so hard for the magic of life, only to recoil at its power when they found it within themselves, scrambling frantically to destroy it, or at least cover it up-forever out of sight if not mind. They winced, and hunched into themselves defensively as she asked them what they loved the most about their lives. Was there anything that called to them; gave them joy? Did the heart inside them beat in excitement for anything? What did their eyes behold that left them in awe of the world? What made their souls tremble with ecstasy?

They stacked the wood around her feet as she stood calmly before them, tied roughly to the stake in the center of their world. Nobody would meet her eyes, but she saw their reactions as her words struck home over and over again, and she would not be silent. She would not turn away from them now, even when their every action conspired to send her into the darkness she was safe from, but would be their prison if they refused to listen; if they refused to awaken from their slumber.

“You think to send me into the Abyss, ‘the regions of Hell conceived of as a bottomless pit’. I know that you do this because I am the whisper that screams to your heart, the light of awareness that hurts your eyes, the fire of purpose that causes you discomfort, and the finger that points to the frightening power of your own heart. I know you are afraid of all you are capable of, but to ignore this truth of you is to sentence yourself to the very hell you wish upon me.

I am the Life you look out upon, your fingers pressed enviously upon the glass of the window, seeing freedom, and never touching it with your own hands. I am the Integrity you lost to ‘blend in’ with the crowd, I am the wild, the bold, the fearless, and the joyful part of you that will always remain silent if you do not heed me now. I am the Word Sorceress, the Sword of Truth, the Light of your Soul, the Way to Joy. I am the very best of you, do you really seek to destroy me to blend into the world of today?”

As she spoke, many listened, many held back, some were even brave enough to try to stop the few whose minds were locked into public perceptions, and acceptable behaviors. But the frightened were many, and the torches in hand reached desperately forward to light the lies stacked around her. As the flames fed greedily on the rebuttals, accusations, and denials, she closed her eyes and whispered into the flames that grew in intensity.

“May these words rise on my breath, above the lies that burn.

May every tear that falls from me be just a lesson learned.

And as I dance upon the flames, my spirit turned to smoke,

Let every heart I long to save believe the words I spoke.

At last, when fire lights my heart, as it is wont to do,

May that illumination be the Truth that leads them through.

Remind those who would disregard the Soul they hold inside

That Hell is here on earth disguised as Life they once denied.”

The crowd grew silent as the crackle of the flames grew louder. There was silence and sobbing, sorrow and joy in that clearing as she disintegrated into smoke and flame, the flame of her sparking in the hearts of those hungry, and the smoke choking the perpetually dissatisfied.

As the smoke cleared, all eyes were caught by the figure of a small girl, heart yet untarnished by world or ego. She seemed to shine from within as she walked slowly to the edge of the fire and picked up the Sword of Truth the Sorceress had dropped in her burning. There was total silence, not even a birdsong, as she looked at everyone and smiled sweetly, turning to walk into the forest alone, the heavy sword cutting a path in the dirt as the tip drug behind her.

And those who were not amazed, were envious.

Good Words!
Good Words!

The Autumn Equinox officially came upon us this past Wednesday at 3:22 AM here in Texas and Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition will be celebrating Mabon at Arlington UU Church this afternoon. Although most of us are somewhat insulated from the harvest season in this modern age compared to our agrarian ancestors we can still appreciate the many things which this time of year brings into our lives (Yes, Pumpkin Spice flavored everything. Haha!) and what we may be harvesting symbolically as a result of seeds we planted earlier this year in our lives. We can appreciate the work done by those who are harvesting in the fields to bring us the fine grains and produce of the land at our local farmer’s markets, bakeries and stores. We can see the weather becoming a bit cooler than it was during the blistering summer months and the leaves will soon begin dropping on some of the trees here locally in the coming weeks perhaps. We are inching closer and closer to a favorite Sabbat of modern Pagan minded folks too. SAMHAIN!

image

We are excited enough that we have already begun bringing out the decorations in our household as you can see. 🙂

What about allergies though? If you’re like me, this time of year can also bring some allergies from dust (some of it from those decorations we’ve been bringing out), mold, fungus and other things that get into the air as the seasons change. How can you arm yourself against these maladies? Well, local honey is one good remedy and usually you can find some at your nearby farmer’s market. Some herbal measures worth considering too are:

Echinacea – Also known as purple coneflower this herb has been used for centuries to boost and balance the immune system. It helps with drainage which leads to the elimination of toxins, and can also work to prevent potential infections. Purple coneflower may be found in the wild in several mid-western states, including Texas, and it can be easily grown in flower beds, where it will bloom in summer and fall. The roots are especially beneficial. Also, you can get some from a local supplier in capsule form or to use as a tincture. Years To Your Health is a fine example of a local store in Irving that carries it.

Eyebright – Pretty much any part of this plant growing above ground (ie, not the roots) are both an astringent and anti-inflammatory. It can decrease a hypersensitive response from your mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, throat, and ears making it a perfect remedy for hay fever sufferers. You can probably find preparations of eye-bright in most herb or health food stores too.

Golden Seal – It’s a very bitter remedy coming from the yellow root of this wildflower but it has antibiotic properties and is quite useful in preventing flare ups of hay fever, sinuses, or chest congestion. It is also an anti-inflammatory for the mucous membranes which helps soothe swollen and irritated tissues. Golden seal is beneficial in combating all types of airborne allergies. You can grow it yourself in rich, loose soil, but because it typically grows in shaded woody areas, it takes a lot of patience and special attention. For example, you’ll need to trellis the plant and keep it away from intense and direct sunlight (which we get a lot of around here). You’re probably best off buying it from a health store as well or from local growers. BE CAREFUL if you’re pregnant as it may stimulate mild uterine contractions.

"I believe in the fundamental truth of all great religions of the world." - Mahatma Ghandi
“I believe in the fundamental truth of all great religions of the world.” – Mahatma Ghandi

Tolerance and Co-Existence – We talk about these concepts a lot within Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition. We strive to be an organization which is eclectic enough to provide a home to many schools of belief and practice within the modern paganism revival. But what do they mean? Does one have to agree with or even necessarily respect the beliefs of another person in order to coexist with them and tolerate them? Not at all! In this ever shrinking world in which population growth and technological advances bring us human beings ever closer together and provide us opportunities to interact with people who may have vastly different cultural makeup and world views than our own, the keys to coexistence lie in common courtesy and manners. I may not personally adhere to or respect the belief in there being only “one true god and all others are false” but I can coexist with and tolerate those who do. If I am invited to attend one of their services I can accept and participate at what ever level I feel comfortable with or I can politely decline. This is the way of courtesy. When we try to force our views on others though we have breached that contract of common courtesy and good manners. As the popular saying goes, religion is like a penis. It is a perfectly fine thing to have and to be proud of. But when you start waving it in my face we have a problem.  So please, when interacting with others who hold views which are different from your own, consider that they can only interact with you at their current level of understanding. Be polite, be courteous, maintain good manners. But be firm in your own convictions as well. Don’t be afraid to state your own opinions or politely refute things which are said that you disagree with. It’s only when such interactions break down into personal attacks and one party or another has renounced the use of reason that a conversation can no longer take place.

Have you heard of Bishnoism? Bishnoi are a socio-religious group found in the Western Thar Desert of India, the desert overlaps areas of Punjab, and Sindh in Pakistan. The name is derived from bis (twenty) and nai (nine) i.e. followers of 29 principles given by Guru Jambheshwar. Guru Jambheshwar gave the message to protect trees and wildlife around 540 years ago, prophesying that harming the environment means harming yourself. He formulated twenty nine tenets. The tenets were not only tailored to conserve bio-diversity of the area but also ensured a healthy eco-friendly social life for the community. Similar to Jainism, people from various communities like Rajputs, Agarwals, Jats and many others follow Bishnoism.

They are quite an interesting group who are worth learning about and from. Find out more about them here:

In 1969 there was a Hippie Tree House Village in Hawaii called Taylor Camp which photographer John Wehrheim says was not a commune and had no rules. In this feature shoot article he takes us back to that time and place with a series of photographs and stories about life at Taylor Camp. Most of these pictures feature nudity so be aware in case you are at work or are otherwise in a sensitive place before clicking the link.

Conflict is a part of life. We have to deal with disagreements and sometimes disagreeable people all the time because we are all individuals with our own opinions, influences and life experiences. How we deal with these situations holds the key to how successful we will be as clergy, as organizers, as parents, or just as people trying to get along in the world. Author, speaker and former English professor, cop and martial arts master Dr. George Thompson wrote a book in the early nineties about his experiences in life and how he developed the Verbal Judo technique, the art of gentle persuasion. Eventually he was invited to speak to police departments, business schools and other organizations and share his knowledge with others. It is well worth learning about if you too, would like to become more successful in using your words in a more persuasive way when dealing with disagreements. Check out this video of him speaking at the Columbia School of Business two years before he passed over to the next realm.

We love our fur babies, familiars and service animals and they are welcome at the event(outside only) but remember it will be hot and lots of activity and people, so it may not be a comfortable day for them. While animals are permitted, I strongly advise to only bring them if NECESSARY. They need to be on a leash at all times, The UU grounds are home to cats and other wild life.
