Temple Newsletter #46

Welcome fellow seekers to our new, monthly format edition of the Temple Of the Standing Stones newsletter. I am Cianaodh Óg, High Priest of this temple, an elder of Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition and very much just another ordinary guy trying to figure it all out. Sometimes, we have entries from the tribe here too. If you would like to have something of yours featured, please let us know!

Spirit Of the Sycamore Elders Hotline
Spirit Of the Sycamore Elders Hotline

Happy Gregorian New Year!

As we enter this new cycle of the standard calendar our temple and tradition are undergoing growth and changes which we hope will help us better serve our communities. One thing we are doing differently now is our newsletter will henceforth (fancy word) be published on a monthly timetable rather than weekly. We feel we will be better able to put out a more robust newsletter with timely information and interesting articles if we are not constantly pushing for a weekly deadline. Also, we are hoping to place more focus on content for the Spirit Of the Sycamore YouTube channel which will give us the ability to show and tell you more about ourselves and what we are all about. Please be sure and subscribe to our channel to keep up with our exciting new offerings. 🙂

Nothing is solid yet but talks are underway for Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition to be holding Sabbat rituals in various locations throughout the Dallas / Fort Worth area. There is a possibility of Imbolc in Garland and Litha in Fort Worth but, still, nothing is firm yet so for now, just chalk it up to the rumor mill. 😉

While this newsletter is rather sparse we do plan to roll out some new sections and content in future editions such as an herb of the month, stone of the month or a bit of lore, history and divination. As always, we are happy to include submissions from the tribe so if you have anything of your own creation which you would like to have featured in the next newsletter please do let us know. Have some ideas for content sections you would like to see added? By all means, let us know that too. We’re here to serve. 🙂

Merry Yule!
Merry Yule!

Winter Solstice!

Tidings of joy and peace to you and yours in this season of so many stories and traditions passed on from generation to generation. Whatever your religious or cultural leanings you are sure to have a few favorite things which symbolize this return of the sun (or for some, the birth of a son) and ways of celebrating with your friends and family. Whether it’s the seeing a beautifully decorated tree, exchanging gifts, kissing under the mistletoe or singing songs of the season and laughing all the way. 🙂 We’ll be gathered for Yule tonight with our tribe and guests in Arlington with the burning of a Yule log and sprigs of holly as we bid farewell to the reign of the holly king and welcome the rebirth of the oak king while the days begin to grow longer following the Winter Solstice. In Druidic tradition the name of this time is “Alban Arthan”, which is Welsh for “Light of Winter”. According to a more poetic telling of the story, the name is “Alban Arthuan”, which means “Light of Arthur”. According to this tale, Arthur is represented by the Sun. In the Winter, the Sun dies and is reborn just as King Arthur is merely sleeping deep inside a mountain and will awaken when his people need him. By another story, on the longest night, in the darkest time of the year, we celebrate the return of the Divine Child, the Mabon, representing the rebirth of the Sun, who will bring warmth, light and life back to Earth again. Whatever tales are your favorite, won’t you join us in celebrating the rebirth of life and bid farewell once again to the darkness?

UPCOMING EVENTS:

TODAY! Yuletide! – Saturday, December 19th, 5PM til 10PM

Come ring in this Yule with Spirit Of the Sycamore Tradition at Cianaodh’s home in Arlington, TX. The address will be provided privately to any who request it upon RSVPing to attend. If you need any info please email templehp@templeofthestones.org. Take part in our ritual and burning of the Yule log then enjoy a fine potluck dinner. We will be doing a white elephant gift exchange with a $20 maximum value so please bring along a wrapped gift if you would like to participate in the fun and games with us. Most anything will do as there will be a couple of rounds of trading or “stealing” so everyone has an opportunity to end up with a gift they are happy with.

Item For Potluck Feast After Ritual

Temple Newsletter #37

Welcome fellow seekers to this edition of the weekly newsletter of Temple Of the Standing Stones. I am Cianaodh Óg, High Priest of this temple and elder of Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition.

The gods speak to us through the flight patterns of birds, the appearance of totem animals, via our spirit guides, by the stars, runes, tarot cards and many other ways. They also communicate with us through one another. Awen, that divine inspiration which flows from our poets and bards, can be heard in the lyrics of your favorite songs or read in your favorite books. It can also come to you from your fellow brothers and sisters of this realm in day to day conversations and interactions. You can be inspired watching dogs play or bees collecting pollen. Sometimes, even sitting, watching the embers of a fire in an old, beat up fire pit in a back yard, sipping a cold beverage and sharing stories with friends. The gods speak to us all the time. All we have to do is quite ourselves and listen…watch….pay attention. It is said that one of the greatest gods of my ancestors possesses a cauldron from which no company shall ever leave unsatisfied. It is also said that another great and powerful goddess possesses a cauldron from which knowledge and inspiration are brewed. I believe the contents of these cauldrons are bubbling forth onto the earth constantly and most of the time we are busy with our lives…busy paying bills… busy taking care of the kids…busy chasing this dream or that so we don’t take notice….we don’t pay heed. For just a little while, make time to quiet your mind and connect with the other side. Listen to what they are trying to tell you and meditate on it. Doing so can change your life.

“I believe in the fundamental truth of all great religions of the world.” – Mahatma Ghandi

Tolerance and Co-Existence – We talk about these concepts a lot within Spirit Of the Sycamore tradition. We strive to be an organization which is eclectic enough to provide a home to many schools of belief and practice within the modern paganism revival. But what do they mean? Does one have to agree with or even necessarily respect the beliefs of another person in order to coexist with them and tolerate them? Not at all! In this ever shrinking world in which population growth and technological advances bring us human beings ever closer together and provide us opportunities to interact with people who may have vastly different cultural makeup and world views than our own, the keys to coexistence lie in common courtesy and manners. I may not personally adhere to or respect the belief in there being only “one true god and all others are false” but I can coexist with and tolerate those who do. If I am invited to attend one of their services I can accept and participate at what ever level I feel comfortable with or I can politely decline. This is the way of courtesy. When we try to force our views on others though we have breached that contract of common courtesy and good manners. As the popular saying goes, religion is like a penis. It is a perfectly fine thing to have and to be proud of. But when you start waving it in my face we have a problem.  So please, when interacting with others who hold views which are different from your own, consider that they can only interact with you at their current level of understanding. Be polite, be courteous, maintain good manners. But be firm in your own convictions as well. Don’t be afraid to state your own opinions or politely refute things which are said that you disagree with. It’s only when such interactions break down into personal attacks and one party or another has renounced the use of reason that a conversation can no longer take place.

Why Study Celtic Mythology

image
Be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant.

The following was a short essay I wrote during my first degree studies with Sacred Fire Temple explaining why I felt further study of Celtic mythology was beneficial:

Many of us now living in America have ancestry somewhere in our bloodlines that is in one way or another Celtic. Studying the tales, folklore and legends of the Gods and Goddesses of the homelands of our ancestors will help put us in touch with the culture and ways of those who came before us. There is great wisdom and tales of heroic battles, crafty deeds and some fun in learning of the adventures of The Dagda, Morrigan, Brigit, Lugh and others. The sources we have today are sketchy and some of them pass through the filters of their enemies such as the Romans and later Christian missionaries but with an open mind and some thought it is a worthwhile endeavor to pick out what may have been the true stories of these great Gods and Goddesses who were the children of Danu or Tuathe De Dannan. Isaac Bonewits once said that it would be wise for more Pagans of Celtic ancestry to learn the old scripts of Ogham and the Gaelic languages so that when archeological finds are made and studied we can get a Pagan interpretation of their meanings rather than having to rely on the findings of those who see the world through different eyes.

Celtic Pub Night

image

One of the plans in the works to be rolled out in conjunction with Temple Of The Standing Stones will be the occasional Celtic Pub Night party. It’ll be a good night to wear your kilt or other Celtic attire, come hoist a pint or share in some fine Celtic cuisine and music, play a round or two of darts and other amusements. Maybe even brush up on some Gaelic language skills.

These will be open to anyone wishing to celebrate all things Celtic and you won’t have to be a member of the temple to attend and participate. Because most of these will be held in a private home except on special occasions in which we decide to invade some other establishment we will ask that people RSVP so that we know who and how many to expect. Announcements will be made and event notices will go out via Meetup.com or other social media venues. So stay tuned!
